Gulf War Syndrome Update.  Department of Defense has just released "Gulf War and Health: Volume 5, Infectious Deseases", identifying nine diseases and 34 long-term health effects that may appear weeks to years after initial infection.  This report can be ordered or read online at National Academies Press

VA Health Care Eligibility for Veterans who Served in Combat Theaters.  Department of Veterans Affairs implemented policies and procedures providing for 2 years - beginning from date of release from active duty - free health care services and nursing home care for veterans who served in certain combat locations during their active military service.

Who is eligible?  Veterans who served on active duty in a theater of combat operations during a period of war after the Gulf War or in combat against hostile forces during a period of "hostilities" after November 11, 1998, and have been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.  Hostilities is a conflict in which the service member is faced with danger comparable to that experienced in combat during war.

Are National Guard and Reserve members eligible?  Yes, if members were ordered to active duty by a federal declaration, served the full period for which they were ordered to active duty and have separated from active military service under other than dishonorable conditions.
